When designing a garden, the most difficult decision is where to begin!
Creating a garden design requires some foresight, but I believe part of the gardening process is to learn and grow along the road. I recommend new gardeners learn some basic design principles and get a simple plan written out that can be completed over time, but any garden design should have room for change and compromise. Sometimes, that which works on paper just doesn't work in the garden. And sometimes, as your gardening skills develop and your appreciation for your little slice of heaven grows, your idea of what constitutes a "garden" changes as well.
That being said, I do believe it is helpful to get a plan for your hardscaping down early on in the process. (It prevents bringing in the jackhammers later on:)) This too, is subject to change, but if you have a general design, you can save yourself a lot of money in the long run, as the hardscaping tends to be the most expensive part of any landscaping project.
So use the ideas and tips below to help you create a garden design plan, then use it as a springboard...not as a blueprint. Part of what a garden teaches us is that so much in this world is not under our control, but can turn out wonderful all the same.
